KAIKAI ARCHITECTURE

The architectural vision

The vision of the KaiKai architecture is to make a seamless link between a contemporary lifestyle and the Richtersveld coastline and hinterland.

The architectural objectives

The architectural objectives are threefold:

  • a modern but straightforward architectural style that makes a striking visual impact;
  • home away from home in terms of comforts and infrastructure;
  • proper utilisation of views of landscape, seascape and internal focal points.

The architectural requirements

In order to achieve the objectives, the architecture must:

  • be timeless;
  • be understated and not compete with the surrounding natural environment;
  • be specific to the coastal skyline;
  • consider the views of neighbours;
  • reflect the simplicity and beauty of the Namaqualand coastal region and hinterland.

The architectural style

To meet the requirements the following elements have been included in the choice of architectural style:

  • flat concrete roofs to blend in with the horison, to minimise the impact on the skyline and to allow unobstructed views from other properties;
  • an architectural outline consisting of simple straightforward lines to blend in with the arid landscape;
  • finishes that compliment the colour of the natural environment;
  • locally available materials, such as natural quartzite;
  • fragmented buildings to optimize the visual impact and to avoid pompous and monotonous blocks;
  • layering of freestanding structures, chimneys and recessed openings to make the visual impact interesting;
  • wind catchers, properly designed sun screens and deep recessed openings to create an appropriate climatic envelope.
